Gis and Gi science: disciplinary innovations and the scientific community.
This article starts with a reflection on the meaning and evolution of Gis and of
the Gi science today. The issues and the perspectives explained stem from the research
and didactic experience of the authors from the Department of Town and Country Planning
at Sheffield University to the Summer institutes of the Vespucci Initiative (www.
vesfucci.org). Many changes have occurred in the field of geographic information: the
strengthening of information systems, the emerging need to create spatial data infrastructures
for the management, planning and safety of countries. The black box of Gis
has been opened by the Gi science and its community which is highly interdisciplinary
and operates through recognized and voluntary institutions.

SIG et science IG: innovations disciplinaires et la communauté scientifique.
Cet article commence par une réflexion sur la signification et l'évolution des SIG et de la
science IG aujourd'hui. Les thèmes et les perspectives exposés proviennent de recherche
et de l'expérience didactique des auteurs: des le Département de la planification de ville
et de campagne à l'Université de Sheffield aux "summer institutes" de la Vespucci Initiative
(www.vespucci.org). Beaucoup de changements se sont produits dans le domaine
de l'information géographique: le renforcement des systèmes d'information, la nécessité
naissante de créer des infrastructures spatiales de donnés pour la gestion, planification
et sûreté des pays. La boîte noire des SIG a été ouverte par la science IG et sa communauté
qui est fortement interdisciplinaire et opère par les établissements reconnus et
volontaires.
