Representing the world between allegory and cartography. - This essay
investigates the ways in which the conquest of the world as a conceived image takes place (Heidegger). This fundamental modernity process is supported both by allegorical and cartographical iconography. For waht concerns allegorical iconography, the strongly symbolical representation of native people's naked bodies reveals the sixteenth century uncertainties linked to the new-born idea of the earth as an object, instead of the traditional concept of the earth as a mother. Geographical and cartographical iconography witnesses the beginnings of a bold scientific approach in the great geographical discoveries. This process ends, but only to start again in a different way with Alexander von Humboldt, who will not neglect the most classic allegorical iconography as a reference.

Représenter le monde por allégorie et cartogrophie. - Cette communication explore les modalités selon lesquelles s'accomplit la conquête du monde en tant qu'image conçue (Heidegger), processus fondamental de la modernité. Ce processus sera illustré à travers l'iconographie aussi bien de type allégorique que de type géographique. Dans le premier cas, la représentation fortement symbolique des corps nus des indigénes révèle les incertitudes qui au cours du XVI ème siècle, accompagnent le passage de la terre conçue comme Mére (nourissière) à la terre conçue comme objet. Dans le deuxième cas, l'iconographie de type géographique et cartographique raconte les débuts et la témérité d'un noveau regard scientifique en relation avec les grandes découvertes scientifiques. Un processus qui se conclut, pour recommencer sous une autre forme avec Alexander von Humbolt, sans, pour autant, négliger de recourir à la plus classique iconographie allégorique.
