Vespucci di fronte all'America: una scena di geografia.- Nella Cosmographia
di Pietro Appiano, nella quale si trovano alcune ossevazioni di Vespucci riguar-
do al Nuovo Mondo in un capitolo che inaugura la geografia culturale, scopriamo un
nuovo e oscuro senso di isolamento e di frammentazione geografica. LAutore argomenta che
il lavoro sulla "topografia" di quel libro può essere esteso fino a prendere in considerazione
quanto la divulgazione di Vespucci influisca sulla comparsa di simpatie "regionali".
La nuova geografia culturale si fonda sull'identità e la soggettività, così come li
definiamo ai nostri tempi. sulla base dei paradossi esistenti nella Cosmographia, si propone
perciò il concetto, modellato sulla Scrittura della Storia di Michel de Certeau, di
una "scrittura della geografia", che segnali la percezione che abbiamo dello spazio e il
modo in cui ci collochiamo in esso e attorno ad esso attraverso i nostri movimenti.

Vespucci facing America: a scene of geography. - In Peter Apian's Cosmographia,
in which some of Vespucci's observations about the New World are found in
a chapter that inaugurates cultural geography, we discover a new and uncanny sense of
isolation and geographical fragmentation. The Author argues that the work on "topography"
in thal book can be extended to consider waht the dissemination of Vespucci brings
to the emergence of "regional" sympathies. The new cultural geography bears on identity
and subjectivity as was are defining them in our time. Building on paradoxes in the Cosmographia,
it is proposed therefore a concept, patterned on Michel de Certeau's Writing
of History [Lécriture de l'histoire], of a "writing of geography" marking our own perception
of space and the way we locate ourselves through our movement in and about it.
