Italian's emigration through the history of Guidi's in Brasil. The abolition of slavery in Brasil at the end of XIX century, caused lack of workers in the coffees plantations. Government tried to remedy it carrying out a campaign of propaganda to attract tenant farmers from Europe. Among different countries, Italy, which was going through an hard period after unification, was able to answer immediately to request. From 1887 to 1907 over one million Italians went to Brasil.
Garfagnana (Lucca), already region of seasonal emigration and with deep problems of poverty became a place of exodus at the end of XIX century. The Guidi family, originating from Garfagnana, can be considered the emigration emblem cause the performances of Giuseppe, Carlo and Angelo in Scotland, Brasil and United States.
Angelo, illiterate, in Brasil (Sertãozinho, Paulo State) has become, with bravery and sacrifices, a considerable agricultural enterpriser Giuseppe, after a short period in Scotland went to Brasil, where he has always worked among his brother. Carlo moved to California, Brasil and Scotland for then coming back to live in Garfagnana.
Nowadays Angelo's heirs, now at the fourth generation, still remember their Italian progenitors with love and pride.
L'emígration italienne vue par l’histoire de la famille Guidi au Brasil. _ L'abolition de l'esclavage à la fin du XIX siècle au Brésil, détermina la carence de main d'oeuvre dans les plantations de café, à laquelle le gouvernement chercha à remédier par une campagne de propagande visant à attirer des colons d'Europe. Parmi les différents Pays, l'Italie qui traversait une période difficile après l'unification, fut capable de répondre immédiatement à la demande. Entre 1887 et 1907 partirent au Brésil plus d'un million d'Italiens. La Garfagnana (Lucca), déjà terre d‘émigration saisonnière et avec de graves problèmes de pauvreté, fut un lieu d‘exodes à la fin du XIXème siècle. La famille Guidi, originaire de Garfagnana, peut être considérée l'emblème de l'émigration grâce aux entreprises de Giuseppe, Angelo et Carlo en Ecosse, au Brésil et aux Etas Unis. Angelo, non scolarisé, au Brésil (Sertäozinho, Etat de Paulo) est devenu, avec courage et sacrifice, un grand entrepreneur agricole. Giuseppe, après une parenthèse en Ecosse est parti au Brésil où il a toujours travaillé à côte’ de son frère. Carlo s'est déplacé en Californie, au Brésil et en Ecosse pour finalement retourner vivre en Garfagnana. Aujourd'hui les descendants de Angelo, maintenant à la quatrième génération, se souviennent avec amour et fierté de leurs aïeux Italiens.
