Research activities in Italy: a geographical view. _ This paper studies the spatial distribution of some indicators concerning the endowment of research activities in Italy. Adopting as geographical unit the "sistemi locali del lavoro" defined by the National Statistical Office, the distribution of the bodies taking part in the networks of international cooperation in the field of research activities supported by the European Union between 1984 and 1999 is firstly analysed. A few other indicators are then added to this one, such as the presence of research centres, university institutions, fairs and exhibitions focused on scientific and technological fields, science and technology parks, so as to define a typology of local systems in terms of endowment of research functions. From the study clearly emerges the "selective" nature, in geographical terms, of the functions taken into account (that show a strong tendency towards a concentration in the main urban and metropolitan areas), and the consequent existence, in several regions of the Country, of situations of marked polarisation, while only few regions (all located in Northern and Central Italy) show a most polycentric distribution.
Les activities de recherche en Italie: une analyse géographique. L'étude analyse la distribution géographique de certaines variables concernantes la présence d'activités de recherche en Italie. Les "sistemi locali del lavoro" définis par le Bureau National de Statistique sont adoptés comme unité d'analyse, et la distribution des organismes participants aux réseaux de cooperation internationale dans les activités de recherche soutenus par l’Union européenne est premièrement examinée. À cet indicateur sont ensuite ajoutées d’autres variables, relatives à la présence de centres de recherche, institutions universitaires, foires commerciales à specialisation technique et scientifique, et technopôles: ainsi, une typologie de systèmes locaux en termes de dotation d' activités de recherche est établie. L'étude met en évidence le caractère selectif sous le point de vue géographique des fonctions examinées (qui tendent à se concentrer dans les aires urbaines et métropolitaines les plus importantes), et, par conséquence, la présence de situations de polarisation marquée en plusieurs régions d'Italie, tandis que seulement quelques régions (toutes situées dans le Nord et le Centre), montrent une distribution plus polycentrique.
