The GISname. The systems towards a geographical information science. _ Should the acronym GIS be spelled out as Geographical Information System or Geographical Information Science? As the name Giscience is becoming increasingly common, the paper reviews recent literature analyzing the historical development of GIS, its elusive definition, and the implications of the use of alternative names for GIS. The likely scenarios for the future of GIS are examined if it is considered a Tool, a Tool Making Activity, or a Science.
