The author, is summing up the results of decades of study, emphasizes first of all the late penetration of settlements into the more remote and higher parts of the mountains of the Adige basin. He then distinguishes successive stratifications of peoples, partly flowing back from the Po Plain. Latinization of Gallo-Roman type was intense, as is clearly indicated by traces of ancient human settlements and by toponymy (with some interesting differences between the variuos valleys); the Roman Empire ensured, through colonization, that it was firmly in possession of the Valley of the Adige. As a result the life and the forms of adaptation of the Region of Trento were always related to those of the Upper Adige.
