A summary is given of the data from the census made on the 15th January 1970 in the Soviet Union of the population as structured by age, sex and education, and by nationality and language, enphasizing the most important variations with respect to previous cod, only 46 of them having more than 100,000 persons ach) are especially interesting. The Slave nationalities taken together comprise 73% of the total population, but the Russians in the strict sense of the term have recreased from the 54,6% of 1939 to the 53% of 1970; the Turkish peoples are progressing (on account of their greater demographical increase), and spreading beyond their traditional territories. In recompense,however,the Russian language is gaining ground among the peoples of other origins, both as mother language and as second language;59% of the whole population now speaks Russian, and a further 18% is able to speak it.
