The evolution of nomadism in the afro-asiatic steppes. After recalling the process generally in acted today of the sedentarization of nomad shepherds, the author refers to the work of V. Monteil on this subject with regard to the Persian tribes of the Fârs. It seems, in general, that two apparently contradictory motives are today causing the nomads to settle on the land: enrichment and poverty (in arid climates pasturing is more profitable than agriculture dependent on scares rains). Particular attention is then given to the recent book of D.L.Johnson, hitch sums up the characteristic of pastoral nomadism in south-west Asia and north Africa. The author of this article adds a few personal notes and comments on pastoral conditions in Turkey.
