Historical Atlases' Western studies in English and German: a review

Studi occidentali in lingua inglese e tedesca sugli atlanti storici: una review. - Gli studi accademici occidentali sugli atlanti storici sono sempre stati relativamente pochi, anche secondo gli stessi autori che hanno compiuto delle ricerche su questo particolare campo di studio che incrocia cartografia e storiografia. In ogni caso, il recente incremento di attenzione che il campo ha ricevuto negli ultimi due decenni ha dimostrato che l'atlante storico è un oggetto di studio degno di interesse, con un potenziale di ricerca ancora non del tutto conosciuto. Lo scopo di questo articolo è 1) fare una review degli studi sugli atlanti storici in lingua inglese e tedesca, 2) proporre una divisione degli studi in due differenti scuole (tedesca e britannicoamericana) e 3) evidenziare sia gli sviluppi recenti che le lacune della ricerca. Infine, verranno avanzate delle proposte per gli sviluppi futuri della ricerca sugli atlanti storici.
The number of western academic studies on historical atlases has always been relatively low, even noted by the authors of previous research that investigated this unique field, that intersects both cartography and historiography. The recent increase in attention that this field has been receiving in the last two decades demonstrates the historical atlas is a subject of study worthy of consideration with a research potential yet to be fully understood. The purpose of this article is 1) to provide a review of the studies on historical atlases in English and German, 2) to propose a division of the studies in two different schools (German and British-American) and 3) to highlight both recent developments and significant gaps in research on historical atlases. Finally, we offer recommendations for future research on historical atlases.
Études occidentales en anglais et en allemand de atlas historiques: une revue. - Les études académiques occidentales concernant les atlas historiques ont été relativement peu nombreuses, même selon l'opinion des auteurs qui ont travaillé dans ce domaine d'études particulier qui met en relation la cartographie et l'historiographie. En tout état de cause, l'attention croissante que ce domaine a reçu au cours des deux dernières décennies a montré que l'atlas historique est un objet d'étude digne d'intérêt, avec un potentiel de recherche pas encore entièrement connu. L'objet de cet article est 1) de faire une review des études concernant les atlas historiques en anglais et en allemand, 2) en proposant une division des études dans deux écoles différentes (Allemand et Britannique-Américain) et 3) en soulignant soit les évolutions récentes soit les lacunes dans la recherche. Enfin, des suggestions sont données pour le développement futur de la recherche sur les atlas historiques.
