The comparison of land registers as a method for an analysis of deforestation in modern age: the case of the Pistoia Apennines (Tuscany). – The objective of this research is a quantitative study of deforestation in the Pistoia Mountains between the end of 1700 and the third decade of 1800. By comparing the detailed geometrical land registers available – e.g. the 1787 “catasto toscano” (Tuscan land register) and the one in 1834 (the “ferdinandeo-leopoldino” Land Register) – it has been possible to establish the level of deforestation in some sample areas at each date. Decreasing woodland areas, coupled with change in rural landed property structure, allow a good understanding of both dynamic environmental factors (increased hydrogeological upheaval) and social issues (emigration) which were mainly caused in this part of the Tuscan Appennine since the end of 1700.
