The Raval neighbourhood in Barcelona: which urban renewal? – The article proposes an analysis of the process of urban renewal, which took place in the Raval neighbourhood, in the central area of Barcelona. In the ‘90s the neighbourhood underwent a significant amount of public interventions, which redesigned its physical and functional profile. This aroused a social change in the area and opened up the possibility to investigate the gentrification phenomenon. The analysis of the physical transformation of the area and of its social structure excludes the possibility to define what happened as gentrification in the strictest sense. It seems more appropriate to trace Raval renewal back to the marginal gentrification process, meant as a separate process and not as an intermediate phase towards the maturity of the gentrification process in the strictest sense.

Le quartier Raval de Barcelone: quel renouvellement urbain?. – L’article propose une analyse du processus de renouvellement urbain qui a impliqué le quartier Raval, secteur central de la ville de Barcelone. Le quartier aux années 1990 a été l’objet de plusieurs interventions publiques, qui en ont redessiné le profil physique et fonctionnel. Cela a produit un changement social dans le secteur et a ouvert la possibilité d’explorer le phénomène de la gentrification. L’analyse de la transformation physique du secteur et de son tissu social exclut la possibilité d’étiqueter comme gentrification, au sens strict du terme, ce qui s’est passé. Il semble plus approprié de reconduire le renouvellement du Raval au processus de gentrification marginale, considéré comme un processus à part, pas comme une phase intermédiaire vers la maturité du processus de gentrification au sens strict du terme.
