Dwelling beyond houses: geographic openings.-The article offers a historical overview of the geographical studies about settlements and dwelling, a main research field in the Italian academic records. Studies about the human dwellings are relevant in many geographical perspectives, and reflect the evolving identity of the discipline. Many different scientific approaches are relevant for this subject: deterministic approaches, influenced by the dominant positivistic paradigm, as well as historicist and functionalist ones, blossomed after the second world war, and the recent humanistictrends. The primary morphological, cultural, and functional approaches were thus followed by a revolutionary change of perspective, which moved the scholars' attention from the study of the houses to the complexity of the dwelling actions. Today, the dwelling choices are characterized by aspects of empathy and by the problem of roots, by existential consciousness and responsibility. The traditional references to the objective visibility and to the spatial-temporal fixity, which characterized geographical studies
in the past, must be accompanied today, in an interdisciplinary perspective, by a renewed attention to the invisible and polysemous dynamics, at different scales, that affect contemporary dwellings.
Habiter au delà des habitations: ouvertures géographiques.- L'article repuparcours les principales étapes de la discussion sur les habitations, sujet centrale de la recherche géografique italienne. Les approches sur l'habitation traversent en diagonale les modèles géografiques et reflètent l'identité changeante de la discipline, des positions déterministes influencées par le climat positiviste, aux orientations historiques et fonctionnelles, après la deuxième guerre mondiale, pour aboutir aux récentes ouvertures humanistes.
À l'étude morphologique originelle, culturelle et fonctionnelle des édifices se sont rajoutés de nouveaux horizons interprétatifs: un révolutionnaire changement de perspective a déplacé progressivement l'attention de l'objet "maison" à l'essence de l'acte d"habiter", qui se définit aujourd'hui en les termes d'empathie et d'enracinement, de connaissance existentielle et de responsabilité. Les réferences traditionnelles à la visibilité objective et à 1a fixité spatio-temporelle, qui ont caractérisé les anciennes études, demandent d'être aujourd'hui conjuguées, en dialogue avec d'autres horizons disciplinaires, avec la considération des dynamiques invisibles, à "multi-échelles" et polisemiques de l'habiter contemporaine.
