The Society for Geographical Studies: Our history
From the start there was close collaboration with the Institute of Higher Studies Geography Department, which later became the Institute of Geography. From the year of its foundation the Society attended the Italian Geographical Congresses, and assisted with the setting up of the School of Geography in Florence in 1902 and the Colonial Agriculture Institute (later renamed the Overseas Agricultural Institute).
In recent years (1986) the Society has signed a formal agreement with the University of Florence at the Institute of Geography where its office is located, while the Library is located in the University Geography Library at 10 Via S. Gallo, Florence.
The Society for Geographical Studies currently has 513 members, most of whom are university lecturers, and middle school and high school teachers.
The Society’s main aim is the promotion and support of initiatives which will serve the progress and spread of the geographical disciplines. To this end the Society publishes the Italian Geographical Review, the Geographical Memories (Memorie Geografiche), organizes study meetings and participates in national and international research programmes.
